FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH YOUR CHOICES

Put a “face” to the name, or type of window, so you can start to form an idea of what will be the best fit for your home.

Double Hung

Close-up of a large bay window with black frame on a brick house, with curtains and green plants visible inside.

Double-hung windows have two vertical halves, which can both be opened vertically. Because both sashes are operable and tilt in, the double-hung window is easy to clean. Double-hung replacement windows are the most commonly installed replacement windows.

Bay

Exterior of a house with a large bay window framed by white trim and black shutters, showing reflections of trees in the window glass.

Bay windows are the combination of three or more windows that angle out beyond the exterior wall. This allows for an extended view as well as additional seating space.

Bay windows typically have three lites (one central fixed lite and two flanking operational lites) at 20-25-degree angles.

Bow

A large white bay window with multiple panes on the side of a house with white siding.

Bow and Bay windows are like a piece of fine furniture for the façade of your home. These unique windows project from your home, creating additional space that can be used for a variety of purposes, such as a window seat or displaying meaningful trinkets.

Bow windows most commonly consist of four lites, all of which can be fixed or operational, set at 10-15 degree angles.

Casement

A large window with blue shutters on a light-colored house exterior, showing a reflection of trees and a nearby building.

Attached to its frame by hinges, a casement window sash opens outward up to 90 degrees from the right or left side of the frame. These windows are easy to clean, allow plenty of sunlight to enter the home, and offer optimal ventilation.

Fully welded for maximum durability, they operate with ease on a set of brass rollers. Vinyl rolling windows are particularly helpful for people who choose to age in place or have limitations on physical movement.

Awning

Close-up of a house's gable with a dormer window, dark shingle roof, and a clear blue sky with a faint moon.

Awning windows are hinged at the top and are available in one, two, or three-lite configurations. Awning windows are made for openings in which the width is greater than the height.

Since awning and casement windows open outward fully, they provide maximum ventilation and natural light. They work well in places where ventilation is required, such as in a bathroom or kitchen, and are also commonly used in a sitting room, where unobstructed views are desired.

Rolling

Sunroom with a wicker sofa, beige cushions, and multiple throw pillows, overlooking a backyard with trees and grass, decorated with potted plants and a coffee table.

Rolling windows are horizontal, with sashes that slide back and forth rather than up and down like more traditional windows. They are essentially double-hung windows turned on their side.

These windows typically use low-friction rolling sliders which allows for easier operation at the push of a finger. This simplicity makes them popular in hard-to-reach areas.
